World Environmental Day 2022

World Environment Day 2022
is the biggest international day for the environment. The event is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and has been held annually since 1974, it has since grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world.

The year 2022 is a historic milestone for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the global environmental community. It marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of UNEP as an outcome of the Stockholm Conference.

This year’s World Environment Day 2022 will be hosted by Sweden. The campaign slogan will be “Only One Earth” is , with the focus on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”. Sustainability is also one of our guiding principles at Demaxon Facilities Limited.

Environmental conservation is a practice that paves the way for protecting the environment and natural resources on the individual, organisational as well as governmental levels.

There are various serious environmental issues that are having heavy effects on human lives. From overpopulation, ozone depletion, global warming to deforestation, desertification and all types of pollution, all these issues pose a severe threat to the existence of planet earth being habitable for humans. Without environmental conservation becoming an effective worldwide movement, it is pointless to expect positive growth especially in the age of digital media which holds the potential to bring a revolution to save our planet from destruction.

There are a host of reasons environmental conservation is necessary including the protection of the ozone layer, the sustainability of food chains for animals and humans, the preservation of drinking water and the proper use of non-renewable resources. The state of the environment plays an important role in healthy living and the existence of life on planet earth. Earth is a home for multiple living species and we all are dependent on the environment for food, air, water, and other needs. Therefore, it is important for every individual to save and protect our environment.

Nigerians have also done their part over the course of history to protect the environment, and one of these is Ken Saro- Wiwa. In 1993, Saro-Wiwa gathered 300,000 Ogoni to march peacefully to demand a share in oil revenues and some form of political autonomy. Ken Saro-Wiwa led a peaceful movement for the environmental and human rights of Nigeria’s Ogoni people whose oil-rich land has been exploited by multinational oil companies. However it did not end so well for Ken and his colleagues  were hanged in Port Harcourt prison on November 10, 1995. The memory on Ken Saro-Wiwa lives on as he once said “I tell you this, I may be dead but my ideas will not die.”

More recently, Nigeria has launched Fly-Green Nigeria Programme to Reduce Co2 Emission. According to ThisDay “He stated that the programme is engineered to launch the first Green Aviation Marketplace program in Africa and promote progressive possibilities that profit the people and the planet through climate smart ESG efficient programs that guarantee Green and Blue Economic Growth for the United Nations Global Green Goals Agenda.” He went on to add “Nigeria is home to a host of climate change challenges, most of all biodiversity degradation and pollution. Nigeria holds the record for the African country with the highest deforestation rate hence, the urgency to mobilize a common but differentiated Sustainable Aviation Solution for Nigeria that is designed specifically to ensure Biodiversity Conservation and Restoration across our communities.”

On the other hand whilst some progress is being made on certain fronts, certain regions of the country are suffering environmentally. Port Harcourt which used to be a garden city, is now christened the soot city. A hitherto land of merry has transformed into a land of misery and the delta is now a shadow of itself. Pollution is said to have “ravaged every nook and cranny of the Niger Delta; with Bayelsa state becoming the world capital of oil pollution.” Oil spills routinely happen in the delta, affecting the livelihood of people there. These spills tend to happen by actions of big multinational oil companies and these companies have faced consequences at times, for instance. Shell was taken to court and the people received a favorable ruling.

As far as real estate goes, there are multiple practices that can be put in place to protect the environment. For example, taking smarter approaches towards lighting and electricity usage,  including energy-efficient light fixtures, automatic light dimmers and lighting systems that connect to occupancy sensors, motion detectors or daylight sensors.Reducing ones building’s water consumption, utilisation of energy saving electrical sockets, investing in proper insulation, this minimises the the need to run heating and cooling units regularly. The use Sustainable, Biodegradable, and Recyclable materials where possible, this refers to both in building process and decorating and whilst inhabiting the property

As people we must do what we can to sustain the environment and protect it for future generations. To find out more about sustainable and eco-friendly buildings, please contact us at Demaxon Facilities Limited.
